What is AI search optimization?
AI search optimization is the practice of improving how likely an AI search system is to find, understand, trust and recommend a business. For a local business it means clean, extractable answers on your site, consistent business data everywhere engines check, structured markup that names your entity, and ongoing measurement of what the engines say.
The work overlaps heavily with good local SEO. The difference is the output you optimize for. Classic SEO optimizes for a ranked position on a page of links. AI search optimization optimizes for inclusion inside a generated answer, where there are often only three to five names.
How is AI search optimization different from SEO?
SEO targets a ranked position in a list of links. AI search optimization targets being named, described accurately and cited inside a generated answer. SEO is a strong input to it, because several AI experiences draw on the same index and the same local profile data, but ranking alone does not guarantee inclusion.
A page can rank first and still be skipped by an assistant if the answer is buried under an introduction, rendered only by JavaScript, or missing the entity markup that connects the page to a real business in a real place.

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving a brand's likelihood of being discovered, referenced, recommended or cited within responses generated by AI search systems. It focuses on the signals a generative system uses to choose which entities to name and which sources to credit.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring content so a machine can extract a correct, self-contained answer from it. AEO is about format and clarity: question-form headings, direct answers, definitions, tables and schema. GEO is about being chosen; AEO is about being extractable.
Can businesses optimize for ChatGPT?
Businesses cannot control ChatGPT, but they can influence the inputs it reads. OpenAI documents its crawlers and honors robots.txt, so allowing those agents, publishing answers in server-rendered HTML, keeping directory and review data consistent, and earning mentions on sources the model already trusts are all legitimate levers.
How do businesses appear in Google AI Overviews?
Google states that AI Overviews are generated from its existing Search index, so standard crawling, indexing and snippet rules apply. In practice that means the same local fundamentals matter: an indexable page that answers the query, a complete Google Business Profile, and corroborating information on directories and review platforms.
How does Gemini decide which businesses to recommend?
Google documents that Gemini can ground answers in Google Search. The selection logic itself is not public. What we observe in our own measurement runs is that grounded local answers closely track Google's local data, so profile completeness and category accuracy carry more weight here than page copy alone.
What sources does Perplexity use?
Perplexity cites its sources inline, which makes it the most legible engine to study. In our runs, local answers commonly cite the business website, the dominant directory for that category, and review platforms. Perplexity publishes its crawler agents and documents robots.txt handling.
Do Google rankings influence AI results?
For Google's own AI experiences, yes, at least indirectly: Google states they draw from the Search index. For non-Google engines the relationship is weaker but real, because the pages that rank well tend to be the pages that are crawlable, clear and corroborated, which are the same qualities other engines reward.
How do citations affect AI visibility?
Citations are the corroboration layer. When a business name, address, phone and category appear consistently across the sources an engine already trusts for that industry, the engine has less reason to doubt or omit the business. Which sources matter is industry-specific, not universal.
