Generative Engine Optimization

What Is Generative Engine Optimization for Local Businesses?

In short

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving a brand's likelihood of being discovered, referenced, recommended or cited within responses generated by AI search systems.

[ 01 ]Definition and boundaries

GEO, SEO and AEO are three views of one job

Each one optimizes for a different output. Treating them as rival disciplines leads to wasted work.

What does GEO actually cover?

GEO covers everything that influences whether a generative system names your business, describes it correctly and credits a source. That includes entity clarity, third-party corroboration, review substance, structured data and publishing information worth citing.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranked position among links. GEO optimizes for inclusion in a synthesized answer where only a few names appear. SEO fundamentals feed GEO, especially for Google's own AI experiences, but a top ranking does not guarantee a mention.

How is GEO different from AEO?

AEO is about format: making a correct answer easy to extract from a page. GEO is about selection: making your business one the engine chooses to name in the first place. A perfectly formatted page for an unknown, poorly corroborated business will still be passed over.

AEOExtraction of a correct answerYour wording is quoted back accuratelyThe answer is buried, vague or JavaScript-only

[ 02 ]Signals

What actually moves GEO for a local business

None of these are secrets and none of them are switches. They are the inputs a generative system has available when it decides which businesses to name.

01

Citations

Mentions of your business on sources an engine already reads for your category. Which sources count is industry-specific: Houzz carries weight for builders, review platforms and the BBB carry weight for lenders.

02

Entity signals

The machine-readable facts that make you one distinct business rather than a name in text: consistent name, address, phone and category, Organization and LocalBusiness markup linked by @id, and named people tied to the business.

03

Authoritative sources

Third-party pages that describe you accurately. A generated answer is assembled from corroboration, so a single self-published claim carries less weight than the same fact stated in three independent places.

04

Structured data

JSON-LD that states what a page is, who published it, what service it describes and where that service is offered. Structured data does not force a mention, but it removes ambiguity that can cause an engine to skip you.

05

Website architecture

Server-rendered HTML, one clear topic per URL, descriptive internal links and clean canonicals. If the answer only appears after client-side JavaScript runs, some crawlers will never see it.

06

Reviews

Volume, recency and substance. Reviews are both a ranking input for local results and a body of third-party text that generated answers frequently summarize.

07

Local directories

Category directories are dense, structured and heavily crawled, which makes them efficient corroboration. Consistency across them matters more than sheer count.

08

Original research

Publishing data other people want to cite is the most durable GEO lever available, because it earns mentions you did not have to ask for. It is why MxdifyLocal publishes its own studies.

09

Brand mentions

Unlinked mentions still contribute context. Being named alongside your category and city in ordinary web text helps a model associate you with both.

[ 03 ]Measurement

How GEO gets measured, and what the number cannot tell you

We measure across 5 AI search experiences: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity.

How do you measure GEO performance?

You run a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts, repeatedly, across each engine, and record whether the business is named, in what position, with what description and which sources were cited. Repetition is what turns a noisy single answer into a usable rate.

MxdifyLocal reports mention rate, recommendation rate, citation rate, average position, competitive share of voice and engine coverage. The roll-up is the AI Visibility Score, always published with its date range, prompt count, geography and methodology version.

What are the limitations of GEO?

Generated answers are probabilistic, engine behavior shifts without notice, personalization affects what a given user sees, and no operator publishes its selection logic. GEO measurement describes a tendency over a sample, not a guaranteed result for any single query.

[ 04 ]Questions

Common GEO questions

Is GEO just a rebrand of SEO?

No, but it is not a separate industry either. GEO depends on most of the same fundamentals as SEO and local SEO, then adds an emphasis on entity clarity, corroboration and citability, and it is evaluated against a different output: a generated answer rather than a ranked list.

Can anyone guarantee GEO results?

No. Generated answers vary between runs and between users, no operator publishes its selection logic, and none of these systems can be controlled from the outside. Any guarantee of an AI mention should be treated as a warning sign.

What are the limitations of GEO?

Measurement is probabilistic, engine behavior changes without notice, and the same prompt can return different businesses minutes apart. That is why we run each prompt multiple times and publish the date range, prompt count and engine set with every score rather than reporting a single result.

How is local GEO different from national GEO?

Local GEO adds a geographic constraint the engine must resolve, which pulls in map and profile data that national GEO largely ignores. For a local business, Google Business Profile accuracy and directory consistency often move the needle more than long-form content does.
